With bombs only: Spreading democracy in the Middle-East

When Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was asked about the demonstrations going on in Egypt, she threw the administration’s weight behind the 82-year-old tyrant Mr. Mubarak, who’s been ruling Egypt for 31 years and is preparing to extend his rule for 6 more. Here is what she said:

Our assessment is that the Egyptian government is stable and is looking for ways to respond to the legitimate needs and interests of the Egyptian people…”.

To be sure, this is an authoritarian, brutal regime that has been in power for 31 years ruling with an iron fist that we’re talking about here.

I guess, when it helps our defense industry corporations and war machine, we “spread democracy” under the barrel of a gun. But to support a homegrown movement to topple despots like Mubarak?…Naaah, we take a pass because, as Hillary put it, “it is a stable government…. ” (as if Saddam’s wasn’t.)

Anyone on this planet is still fool enough to think America stands behind democracy and cares about human rights?
